So You Want to be a Race Car Driver?

Well, now you can at Watermelon Capital Speedway.  The management at WCS has a weekly contest called The Grand Stand Race Car Driver Challenge.  Three lucky spectators will have the chance each week to drive a Claimer car around the speedway at speeds approaching 60 mph.  The contestant that covers the speedway in the lowest elapsed time will be declared the weekly winner.  The winner receives a trophy and a free pass for the next race along with having their picture taken in the Sunbelt Ford Winner’s Circle.  The weekly winner is qualified for the monthly contest and the monthly winner will be qualified for the year end event.

Once the drivers are selected from a drawing, they are ushered to the VIP suite to don their official racing fire suits and helmets.  They are then escorted through the grandstands and onto the paved 3/8 mile racing surface for their introduction to the crowd.  The crowd is asked by the announcer to pick one of the three drivers most likely to win the contest.  They have their own fan club to cheer them on around the track.

After the driver introductions, the drivers are taken onto pit road to get ready to be buckled into their race car.  Each driver is buckled in and then briefed on the controls of the Claimer race car.  Once they are ready, the driver pulls off of pit road and onto the race track for the first time in their life.  After they hit the number one turn their adrenaline really starts to roll.  The car gets up to speed on the back straight and heads into turn three, through turn four and then decelerates to the start finish line.  When the car stops on the start finish line, the driver is asked if they have anything that they would like to say before they assail the track to get the best elapsed time possible.  The flagman counts to three and throws the green flag to start the clock.

The car roars off the starting line with smoke coming from the tires as they are spinning for traction.  Once the tires hook up the driver grips the wheel for their first turn of driving a race car.  As the car drifts out of turn one and into turn two the driver again flat foots the throttle and roars down the back straight.  As the driver is approaching turn three the car is really rolling and they attempt to get the car set into turn three.  After the cars rips into and out of turn three, the driver attempts to take a low line into turn four.  As the car drifts out of turn four, the driver again flat foots the throttle to the start finish line for the checkered flag.

All of this takes less than 35 seconds and the driver releases the throttle for their cool down lap and guides the car back onto pit road.  The crowd roars with approval at the feat just accomplished while also wishing that they were in the car.  When the driver exits the car through the window, they can hardly believe what just happened.

The driver is interviewed and asked to give his assessment of what just happened and about all they can say is “That was awesome.” For most drivers, this is the first time that they have ever driven a race car.

This scene is repeated two more times and then the driver with the lowest elapsed time is declared the winner.  The race car is ushered into Victory Lane and the trophy is presented to the winner while his picture is taken.  We have two very happy former spectators and one ecstatic former spectator.  Watermelon Capital Speedway has three more certified GRAND STAND RACE CAR DRIVERS!!

Don’t wait too long to come to Watermelon Capital Speedway to become our next GRAND STAND RACE CAR DRIVER.
