Watermelon Capital Result's from 8/21/10 Bandoleros Pure Stock Super Street Mini Stock Claimer (Pro Challenge article courtesy of www.southernprochallenge.net) Anderson Bowen went home with the trophy Saturday night at Watermelon Capital Speedway, but not without very stiff competition from Grant Crane, John Morgan Tullis, Nick Hazelwood and Austin Raines. It seemed as though the 10 truck of Crane was on his way to his first feature win in the Pro Challenge series, however on lap 11, things began to change. With Bowen on the pole for the 8-lap heat race, things went very quick as these cars are so fast on this 4/10th mile D-shaped track with Crane, Tullis, Hazelwood and Raines following. The start of the feature, now with Bowen on the pole and Crane outside, got off to a quick start with Crane taking the lead. As the laps progressed, so too did Crane's lead making it look as though he was a sure bet to win the 25-lap feature. However, lap 11 brought out a caution for a spinning car and tightened the field up which made for some interesting racing throughout the remainder of the event. As the green flag fell Crane maintained his lead over Bowen, but not without some serious side by side racing that brought the fans to their feet wondering when the two of them were going to crash with Bowen eventually taking over the top position. With the 11 of Hazelwood and the 6 of Tullis right on the leaders tail, close racing brought out another caution on lap 15 when the 6 of Tullis just barely tapped the 11 of Hazelwood going into turn 3 causing both of them to spin. With Bowen on the inside and Crane outside the drop of the green got off to a bad start for Crane as he missed a shift losing ground to Hazelwood and Tullis, thus sending him to fourth. With Hazelwood now running second and Tullis third, the race was on to catch Bowen. However on lap 23, one of the characteristics of this race track not having outside retaining walls got Hazelwood sending him off the track coming out of turn 2 bringing out yet another caution. With a green, white, checkered finish now in place Bowen brought them off turn 4 in single file for the restart. John Morgan Tullis being in the second position got off to a slow start allowing the 10 truck of Crane and the 11 of Hazelwood to get by moving him into 4th. With this taking place behind him, Bowen managed to broaden his lead and take his number 29 Chevy Monte Carlo to victory lane. Something he's never managed to do at Watermelon Capital Speedway. While in victory lane, Bowen wanted to give thanks to his dad (David) and Wayne Willard for providing him with a front running car tonight. With David and Jonathon Chandler normally doing the work on this car but not able to attend this event, my dad and Wayne did a great job. We broke a sway bar arm during practice and was unable to see how the car would react once they made repairs. But it was obvious Wayne knows what he's doing with me going out without any other practice and winning both my heat race and the feature, stated Bowen I do have to say it was a hard fought battle between Grant and I tonight as he was very competitive and looked as though he had the race won. I had to give it my all just to get around him and stay out front. And for me to finally get a win here feels great as we've seemed to always struggle at this track. Special notes of interest: The number 1 car of Austin Raines had a throttle cable stick going into turn one on lap 11 which could have been a very bad situation. However, the quick thinking Raines managed to hit the kill switch and loop the car to avoid serious damage. The track worker in this corner said he knew something was wrong when the car never slowed down going in the corner. This ended Austin's night of racing, but he did a great job of saving the car. The most bizarre incident of the day took place when the 12 truck of Trevor Hoek barrel rolled coming out of turn 2 during practice. As onlookers viewed the strange happenings, it was evident that everyone was in awe. Not knowing what caused the truck to roll over was confusing to all. Hoek was on his final lap of practice and never left the groove, but somehow the truck lifted to it's right and then hooked back left in which case it began to make it's roll in a counter-clock wise direction. Trevor climbed out of the race car with only minor bruises and drove it back to the pit area. But his night was over due to extensive damage never getting to compete in regular competition and leaving other competitors concerned as to what had just taken place. Pro Challenge
